Touring Borders Knitwear

We traveled to the Scottish Borders to visit our knitwear factory.

A Close-knit Community

Hawick is a town located in the Scottish Borders region of Scotland. It is situated in the valley of the River Teviot, which flows through the town. With a rich history dating back to at least the 12th century, Hawick played a significant role in the textile industry during the Industrial Revolution, particularly in the production of high-quality knitwear and tweed. Hawick's rich history in the textile industry offers a blend of historical charm set against the natural beauty of the Scottish Borders.

Founded in 1874

We developed our own line of fully fashioned knitwear in partnership with a Scottish mill who's history spans 150 years. Each of our designs are exclusive to The Armoury and feature a refined fit to complement our range of formal tailoring and casual Dayware pieces.

Spool Ties

The high-quality cashmere and lambswool used by our Scottish manufacturer produces an exceptionally soft and warm finished garment that doesn't sacrifice durability or longevity.

Once the yarns are selected production begins on the larger panels for the body and sleeves. From there, the panels are attached by hand to circular knitting machines to add the hem trim and cuffs.

For our sleeveless cardigans, plackets are sewn on and buttons are selected from a range of colorful mother-of-pearl.

Each pull-over knit is woven without a neck opening, which is marked by hand using paper patterns, and then individually cut.

Fully Fashioned

Fully fashioned knitwear refers to a method of knitting garments where each piece is individually shaped during the knitting process, resulting in minimal waste and a precise fit. This technique involves shaping each panel of the garment to the exact dimensions required, incorporating increases and decreases in the knitting pattern to create curves, slopes, and contours. While it may require more skill and time in the manufacturing process, the resulting garments exhibit a level of quality and craftsmanship that sets them apart in the world of knitwear. The trim is closed by hand stitches at the collar, so that the garment can be sent on for final finishing and washing.

Each season we curate a selection of new colors and qualities for our knitwear collection. This season's additions include brushed Shetlands, camelhair and cashmere.
