Elliot Hammer Considers The Armoury Polo.
“Like a pair of well worn loafers, a polo is appropriate for pretty much any occasion that forces you to leave home. It’s even pretty good for just lounging around too.
If I’m ever looking indecisively into my shirt wardrobe for more than five seconds then I’ll remind myself that life’s too short and will be reaching for the faithful polo.
Personally, I have a few navy ones in rotation at various ages. I like fresh ones for dinner under a navy suit, worn-in ones for denim and a sport coat and the rattiest ones that are hanging on by a thread are great for the beach.”
“I don’t have anything against the spread collar but for me it’s always been the button-down. There’s something about the soft roll of the collar that strikes a balance between being prepared and a relaxed elegance.
If it gets warm then rolling the sleeves works just as well as the short short-sleeved cousin, but comes with the bonus of letting everyone know you’re a hard worker.”
“As with all clothing, the fabric is very important. The classic cotton polos are excellent (especially as they develop a nice fade) but in the sweltering New York summer months the lighter weight cotton / linen mix is just right.
The other joy of the polo is they’re low maintenance. Just throw them in the washing machine and let them air dry. If you figure out how to hang them well then they practically don’t need any ironing either.”
