Inspired by Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, this coat has a few tricks up its sleeves.
Known for its vast forests and mountainous terrain, Hokkaido is home to the harshest winters in Japan. When we set out to create our own version of a Balmacaan overcoat, there were certain classic features, such as raglan sleeves and a traditional length, that we wanted to include. We added a few details of our own to ensure that this is the one overcoat you need to take you through the toughest winters, whether that be in Hokkaido or beyond.
We used an adjustable belt system with buttons hidden securely inside the lining and found a dense quilted liner that can be removed for transitional months.
The Hokkaido coat is our interpretation of a classic Balmacaan, a piece of outerwear with a rich history rooted in 19th-century Scotland. Originally designed as a highly functional overcoat for outdoor activities like hunting and fishing, the Balmacaan was created to protect wearers from the harsh, wet weather typical of the region.
The Balmacaan coat is characterized by its clean lines, loose and slightly flared shape that allows for freedom of movement and layering. It's cut with a short, rounded collar that can be turned up and fastened for added protection against wind and rain.
