Unquestionably the finest handmade leather goods in the world.

Komatsu-san of Ortus represents the finest in handcrafted leather goods, making bespoke pieces for clients that often end up being something fully unique.

Unquestionably Handmade

Komatsu-san founded Ortus Bag in 2012, having studied under Yukihiro-san of Fugee leathers. Each Ortus commission is an in-depth process that can take up to two years to complete. Each seam on an Ortus Bag is entirely sewn by hand.
Another component of an Ortus Bag is the hardware and hinges which are also made in-house, custom created for each piece. The materials range from solid brass to more precious metals such as sterling silver.
Komatsu-san spends hours designing each piece, taking into account the physics of how a smaller piece of leather for the inside lining will attribute to how a pocket flap will sit perfectly closed.
One-Piece construction is featured throughout many of Komatsu-san's designs. The looped handle over a brass bar, which was made in-house, fits with the one-piece body of the bag - something Komatsu likes to do wherever possible.  "It's such a shame to cut up a nice piece of leather into parts," he says. "There's a lot more pleasure in using one piece around the whole outside."

How Great Things Age

We often talk about how our products will age and break-in over time. The difficulty lies in showing how a bespoke suit, or custom shoes will further form to the wearers body over time through images. However, it is easy to see the patina that a fine hand-made leather bag gains over the years. Below we compare a relatively new briefcase to one that has been traveling with its owner for years.
Bespoke Primula bag for Mr. C

The Primula is one of Komatsu-san's most well known design, inspired by vintage music cases. This bag is made from one piece of leather and includes custom sized internal pockets for letters and pens. While Mr. C only received this bag earlier this year, it had already begun to develop a patina of its own.

Bespoke Hazel bag for Mr. S

Made from English Bridal leather, the Hazel briefcase is inspired by vintage British designs. Mr. S has carried this bag with him everyday for the past couple of years, giving the dark bridal leather and solid brass hardware time to patina and earn a look that only worn leather can attain.

Ortus Bag at The Armoury

With each bespoke product usually taking more than a year to produce, we are very excited to offer these one-off pieces for immediate sale.
