Dick's Picks with Nackymade
Our team shows off their favorite custom Nackymade commissions, illustrated by resident cartoonist Richard "Dick" Carroll.
Nackymade is our go-to brand for eyewear, and easily one of our favorite brands here at the Armoury. With an atelier in Kobe, Nakagawa and his wife Mocky can create a variety of bespoke and made-to-order eyewear, in various shapes and materials. Here, our staff showcases some of their favorite commissions, drawn by our very own Richard Carroll.
Ben Levy, Sales Floor Manager
“When ordering this pair, I wanted to make something classic but dorky and fun. The matte finish is a bit more interesting to me than something shiny and I had Nacky make the frames double his normal thickness. The arms also have his interpretation of the Playboy bunny logo. I like using logos like this in funny, out of context ways.”
Amechi Ugwu, Sales Associate
“There's nothing that influences my tastes and style more than the late 70s's, early 80's. The first time I saw these as a sample pair, I instantly thought of a photo of Issac Hayes wearing this crazy grid-patterned jacket with a suede Western yolk, but his shades were the highlight for me. The dark tortoise tones the shape down a little bit, but bigger is better where I come from, so I don't mind the flair.”
Joey Lau, Operations Manager
"I went with a cat-eye frame since it's more feminine and it suits the shape of my face! The acetate material Nackymade uses is very light, and the camel color goes well with my outfits. Since I went custom, I picked mismatching arms with a cat-chasing-bird theme for something more fun and interesting."
Jim Parker, Store Manager
"So many of my style icons--Bruce Springsteen, Harrison Ford, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, even Bruce Lee!--wore acetate aviators, but I've never had a pair I truly loved. That is, until I had a brief conversation with Nacky. Somehow, without reference photos or extra measurements, he made me these incredible frames. They're perfect for avoiding eye contact and pretending I'm on my way to my gig opening for the Boss."
Mark Cho, Co-Founder
"For this particular pair of Nacky's, I wanted to do something fun with the arms. I like to collect watches. There's a lovely old diving watch called the Tudor Snowflake, a cousin to the Rolex Submariner, and it has a distinctive shape of hand that looks a little like a snowflake. I showed it to Nacky and he very skilfully translated it into the arms of my sunglasses!"
